Shop management

The least spectacular part – and the one most channels fail on.

Shop management is the work nobody sees: paperwork, product data, range decisions, weekly evaluation and daily conversations with creators. It decides whether an approved shop turns into a sales channel.

  • TikTok Shop Partner (TSP)
  • Retainer plus performance-based commission

  • 6–8 weeksto the first sales – sampling takes that long
  • 1–5 SKUshero products instead of the full catalogue
  • 500 unitsminimum stock – per SKU, not per range
  • 1 callper week with the brand, plus a written report

Two starting points – two first steps

Whether a shop already exists decides where the work begins. Both routes end in the same place: a strategy built on products and numbers.

No shop yet

We build the shop, run the onboarding and collect all the required documents. We submit and follow up until approval is in place.

This is less about speed than about care: what is set up wrongly causes errors later that are more work to fix than to do right. Add to that the connection to existing systems – ERP, shop systems, marketplaces – and the compliance side with GPSR and EPR details.

Which documents are needed and where approval fails is in Becoming a TikTok Shop seller: requirements and process.

Shop already exists

Then the work starts with strategy. Which products carry the channel, which are given away, what commission is appropriate, when ads come in – all of that is decided before the first action, not along the way.

An existing shop is no head start if product data and range were never aimed at this channel. Often the first step is clearing up, not rolling out.

What the strategy decides

Five decisions come first. They depend on each other – making the third without having answered the first is guesswork.

  1. Identify hero products. Which items in the range have what it takes to carry the channel at all – by margin, by how explainable they are on video, and by availability. TikTok itself recommends starting with one to five hero SKUs rather than the full catalogue. That matches what we see: a broad range spreads attention instead of concentrating it.
  2. Set the sampling plan. Which products go to creators free of charge and in what quantity. That is a budget decision, not a gesture. How the process works is in Product seeding: what it is, definition and process.
  3. Set the commission. What creators should get per sale – high enough that they pick the product up at all, low enough that the margin holds. The usual rates by industry are on the page TikTok Shop affiliate management.
  4. Decide when ads start. Ads amplify what already sells organically. Switched on too early, they burn budget on videos that prove nothing.
  5. Set the ad budget. How much it takes for a campaign to get out of its learning phase at all – the thresholds are on the page TikTok Shop ads.

TikTok packages the same logic as the ACE model – assortment, content, empowerment: the right range first, then content that shows it, then the levers that amplify both. The order is the actual content of the model: starting at content or ads means paying for reach on a range that has not been tested.

Why it takes six to eight weeks to the first sales

Not because approval takes that long, but because sampling is a process involving people.

After the strategy, the individual conversations with creators begin. That is where the number of videos is negotiated and a firm commitment is obtained – instead of shipping products and hoping. Then comes shipping, then production, then publishing.

Every one of those steps costs days. Taken together that is six to eight weeks to the first sales. Anyone calculating faster is planning with a number that does not exist in practice.

Two numbers that only appear to contradict each other: TikTok cites 10 to 50 orders and roughly €1,000 to €3,000 GMV as a realistic first-month target. That applies to a shop publishing its own videos and going live from day one. Our six to eight weeks refer to building through creators – slower to start, but it carries further because it does not depend on your own airtime. In practice both routes run in parallel.

Videos appearing at all is not automatic: without a relationship to the creators, fewer videos regularly come back than samples were sent. That is exactly why we talk first and do not just ship.

Product titles: TikTok lets people discover, Amazon lets people search

On TikTok Shop the product title is a measurable sales factor – and it works by different rules than on marketplaces.

On Amazon someone types in what they are looking for. The title therefore has to contain the search terms people use. On TikTok nobody searches – the platform pushes products to people who did not know them. So the title does not need to be found; it needs to convince in the moment it appears.

The platform names lower limits for this: a title from 40 characters, at least five product images and a benefit-led description from 500 characters. That is the state in which a product page can be surfaced at all – not the state in which it sells.

Our formula for the product name

We build titles in a fixed order from five blocks. It emerged from live operations and is passed on in this form in our training sessions with TikTok Shop:

[Product brand] + [Product name] + [Use case] + [Product type] + [Main function / distinctive feature / benefits]

Example(Brand) 40W USB-C Charger for Travel with MacBook, iPad, iPhone 17/16 USB-C 3 Ports Ultra-Fast 40W Charging with Touch Control

Product brand
The brand first – it places the product before the rest is read, and makes repeat purchases possible.
Product name
What it is, including the figure that makes the difference: not „charger“ but „40W USB-C charger“.
Use case
For whom and for what. This is the block missing on marketplaces and decisive on TikTok – „for travel with MacBook, iPad, iPhone“ answers „is this even for me?“ while someone scrolls past.
Product type
The technical version that makes variants distinguishable: „USB-C 3 ports“.
Main function, distinctive feature, benefit
The reason to buy, at the end – the thing customers name themselves in the livestream. „Ultra-fast 40W charging with touch control“ is not an attribute but an argument.

The order is the point: an Amazon title stacks search terms because someone is searching for them. This title answers three questions in reading order – what is this, is it for me, why this one and not the other. Side effect: anyone filling the formula completely lands above the platform's 40-character minimum automatically, without padding the title with keywords.

A catalogue copied one-to-one from a marketplace is therefore almost always a catalogue with the wrong titles. TikTok documents the formal minimum requirements in the TikTok Shop Academy, which can be read without a seller account. Which structure actually sells in which category is not in there – that comes from sales data.

Range and stock: the two numbers that have to be right beforehand

How many products make sense depends on the niche. Two lower limits apply everywhere regardless.

  • At least five products at launch. Fewer means there is nothing to test – and which product pulls is decided by the market, not the brand.
  • At least 500 units in stock per SKU. Not per item and not per range: one product in five variants is five SKUs – and therefore 2,500 units.

The most expensive mistake in shop management: promoting a SKU with 100 units in stock – and not being able to say whether it can be restocked. If it takes off, it is sold out within days. The attention is there, the goods are not, and the momentum is gone. Availability is not a logistics question but a range decision taken before the first campaign.

What happens continuously without anyone noticing

Most of the work appears in no report, because it consists not of actions but of observation and conversation.

Analysis for the next step

We do not only evaluate what happened, we prepare what makes sense next. The strategy is continuously held against the actual numbers and adjusted.

Weekly report and new targets

Every week there is a written interim status with new targets – not a monthly review once the week is already lost.

Weekly call with the brand

A fixed appointment with the seller: what has moved, where it goes next. Decisions are made there, not in an email chain.

Daily conversations with creators

The most invisible part: talking to affiliate creators, motivating them to make more and better videos. A creator who feels looked after films the next video – one who only received a parcel does not.

Data preparation

Raw data from Seller Center says little. Prepared, it shows which product works with which creator and where budget belongs.

Optimising GMV Max campaigns

GMV Max campaigns are not switched off but permanently watched and adjusted – through video quality, number of videos and product selection.

The same forward planning drives preparation for the promotional periods: „Deals für dich“ needs around six weeks of lead time, and stock has to be in place before the window. What to watch for is on the page TikTok Shop campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

What does an agency actually take on in shop management?

Setup and onboarding, submitting and following up documents, connecting ERP and existing shop systems, product data and titles including GPSR and EPR details, range and sampling strategy, commission management, weekly evaluation and ongoing creator support.

What is the formula for a product title on TikTok Shop?

Product brand + product name + use case + product type + main function, distinctive feature or benefit. Example: „(Brand) 40W USB-C Charger for Travel with MacBook, iPad, iPhone 17/16 USB-C 3 Ports Ultra-Fast 40W Charging with Touch Control“. The order is what matters: it answers in turn what the product is, whether it fits the viewer, and why this one and no other.

How long does it take to the first sale?

Six to eight weeks. The period is not created by approval but by sampling: individual conversations with creators, commitment, shipping, production and publishing of the videos.

What is realistic in the first month?

TikTok cites 10 to 50 orders and around €1,000 to €3,000 GMV for the first month – for a shop publishing its own videos and livestreams from day one. Building through creators starts more slowly but carries beyond your own airtime.

What most often blocks shop approval?

The right documents not being submitted – usually an address that does not match the identity document, or a registered company form that does not match the account holder.

How many products should a brand list at launch?

That depends on the niche, but at least five – otherwise there is nothing to test. TikTok itself recommends focusing on one to five hero SKUs. More important than the count is stock: at least 500 units per SKU being promoted.

What does shop management cost?

A monthly retainer plus performance-based commission. The amount depends on scope. The platform's sales commission applies regardless – the line items are in TikTok Shop fees: what it really costs.
