TikTok LIVE auctions: rule check for hosts

Restrictions almost always land shortly before a scheduled livestream – and then cost you the broadcast slot. This check tests your format and your host script against the rules in TikTok’s official guideline for LIVE auctions, before you go on air.

The one question that lets you judge any format

Is the outcome fixed before the purchase?

Buyer chooses their team beforehand: allowed. Team is assigned at random afterwards: prohibited. A pack contains what the manufacturer put in it: allowed. Platform or host hands out something additional at random: prohibited. Anything that looks like gambling is prohibited.

Format check

    Script checker

Paste in your host script or your presenter notes. The checker flags wording that appears on the guideline’s risk list – red for clear breaches, yellow for passages that need to be judged in context. The text stays in your browser and is not uploaded anywhere.

Please note: the checker and both word lists are built for German-language host scripts, because that is the wording TikTok assesses in the German market. If your hosts present in German, paste the German script here – the explanations are in English.

The two lists for the host briefing

Wording taken from the guideline, in German because that is what is said on air. A host who goes through both lists before every stream avoids the bulk of all restrictions.

What is allowed and what is not

        Auctions in general

Allowed: explaining the auction rules clearly, meaning opening bid, increment and countdown · showing the condition of the product before bidding · proof of authenticity for used and luxury items · keeping auction mechanics separate from surprise elements · fact-based price references · guiding buyers towards responsible participation · designing giveaways independently of bids.

Prohibited: gambling mechanics, meaning tying random rewards to bids · guarantees of winnings, rarity or value · misleading price anchors · concealing defective or incomplete product information · „no refunds under any circumstances“ · tying giveaways to bids or purchases · false urgency or artificial scarcity.

        Trading cards and TCG

Allowed formats: choosing a team or player before the purchase with a fixed assignment · personal pack or box unboxing, complete pack, all cards shown live · a defined box or case unboxing following fixed rules · card reveals where chance comes solely from the contents of the pack.

Prohibited formats: random team assignment after the purchase · draft-style breaks with a random selection order · target-based or hit-based breaks · chance-based games, spin wheels, mystery mechanics · points and loyalty systems that convert points into product chances · any gamification that increases chance-based outcomes.

Source and status. The rules come from the official TikTok document „Operativer Leitfaden für LIVE-Auktionen“, section 6, as at 9 July 2026. The check reflects that status and replaces neither a reading of the current guideline nor legal advice. For formats that neither list clearly covers, the rule of thumb above applies – and in case of doubt, leave the element out.

        Frequently asked questions

Why do restrictions always arrive just before the stream?

Because the review attaches to the account, not to the individual livestream. So the status check belongs on the day before, not on the broadcast day – that leaves time to adjust the format or move the date.

Are giveaways prohibited in a livestream?

No. What is prohibited is the coupling. A giveaway anyone can enter regardless of bid or purchase is permitted. As soon as bidding or buying becomes a condition of entry, it is a gambling mechanic.

Are we allowed to open packs live?

Yes, as long as chance comes solely from the contents of the pack itself. Opening a sealed pack live and showing the cards is a permitted format. As soon as the host or the platform hands out, draws or assigns anything on top, it tips over.

What do we need technically before the first stream runs?

Whitelisting for temporary auctions. Approval takes a few days – a broadcast date should never be promised before the request has gone out. More under TikTok Shop LIVE.

        What happens after a breach?

Typically a restriction on the account. It does not hit the individual format but the ability to go live at all – and usually at the worst possible moment.

        Do you go live regularly?

Then the rule check is only the first step. We take on host briefing, whitelisting, auction setup and the numbering, without which nobody knows afterwards who won what.
